Hey, friends. I sat down this afternoon to poke around in Ableton and ended up taking a break for some site editing.

I think it'd be really cool to incorporate a "music blog" of sorts within the site itself, just to serve as a place for me to rant and rave about whatever new thing I'm into these days. I tend to post pretty frequently on social media about whatever great-amazing-new-song I've discovered that I think the world should hear - but let's be honest, I've usually got something else to say beyond just posting a quick link. What is it about a song or a sound that keeps us engaged and wanting more? What elements resonate between our ears that link up with our soul and somehow create that magic every artist aims to achieve?

I'm trained more so in the visual arts, but I grew up in a pretty musical household. I can remember sitting outside my siblings' rooms as they blasted whatever 90's bands they were into at the time. Just sort of hugging my knees and humming along. My dad was a drummer and I can remember going to his shows when I was a little older. In the car, my mom would play cassette tapes of her favorite Mexican singers and she'd sing right along. It seemed there was always some sort of noise or music being played both in and outside the house. Even if that noise was the simple sound of cicadas resonating from the trees in our backyard on a summer evening. I loved it all, and I carry the nostalgia with me every day. Much of that childhood nostalgia permeated the music I made on my EP, Universal. Somehow as the song would be coming along, I'd carry it back to an afternoon of climbing trees or staring at the Milky Way on a warm summer night. Art, both visual and musical, tends to incorporate or revolve around many aspects of an individual's personal history - it was a little surprising to discover how often that happened during the making of this album.

As time moves on and I (hopefully!) continue to produce stuff people enjoy listening to, I'll grow to improve upon how it is those personal histories are expressed. Music has such incredible power to impact the mood of the listener, and that's sort of a huge responsibility. Even having the capability to do this is a huge feat in itself. I'm excited and curious to see how far I can go in achieving this magic of emotional expression through music.. Part of that is being able to tackle writer's block, which is something I tend to struggle with. Here's hoping some good, musical things come out of this week! :)
